Riviera del Conero

vela beach

Unforgettable beaches nestled in the rocks and overlooking unspoiled nature, but also hubs where you can breathe in art and culture.

A promontory of sinuous shape, designed by the winds that Mount Cònero, which gives this area of the Marche region its name, meets facing the Adriatic Sea. Dozens of beaches surrounded by rocks and lush vegetation, reachable by sea or by footpath, and many towns steeped in history and tradition: all of this is the Conero Riviera. The Riviera is characterized by surprising, green and sometimes wild nature, unforgettable crystal clear seas, and numerous beaches, some easily accessible, others more remote and hidden. Of these, Two Sisters stands out, so called because of the existence of two large piles (“the two sisters”, in fact), accessible only by sea and Mezzavalle.

Then there’s friendly Vela beach, with sail-shaped rocks. Finally, it’s impossible to resist the charms of Portonovo’s pebble and rock beaches, all submerged in Mediterranean scrub. Not to be missed in this pretty town is a visit to the Church of Santa Maria, a Romanesque gem that dates back to the 11th century. Conero is actually the city beach of Ancona . In the beautiful capital there is much to see: S. Ciriaco Cathedral, Rocca della Cittadella from the 16th century, S. Paolo al Cassero Fortress – Cardeto Park, amphitheater, Piazza del Plebiscito, civic art gallery with works by Guercino, Lotto and Titian, the Omero Archaeological Museum and State Museum, the only example of a tactile museum in Europe.

There are also several holiday resorts on the Conero Riviera: starting with Sirolo , a typical medieval village overlooking the sea and the only area in the Marche region rich in archaeological excavations . Since 1200 the church of the patron saint, San Nicola da Bari has dominated the square. To admire: one of the largest Piceno necropolises in the “Pini” area, and the Church of San Pietro al Conero (11th century), the original work of Benedictine monks.

Another stop is Numana which, besides the stunning beaches, also has a lot to offer from a cultural point of view, such as the State Antiquary which houses the treasures of Queen Picena and other necropolises, or the new Sanctuary which houses the wooden cross “miracles” which, according to tradition, were performed by those who took down Christ’s body from the Cross; finally, the Arch of “La Torre”, the only medieval remains of the ancient parish tower of San Giovanni, is also worth admiring.
