"Piazza del Campo" is still used today for the well known Palio horse race which is one of the most famous popular Italian manifestations. The Palio follows the historical rules and regulations written and deposited in the offices of the Siena City Hall in 1644, year of the first Palio. The race is a historical secular tradition strictly connected with the origin of the Contradas of Siena and the Palio is preceded by five hours of flag-throwing acrobatics to celebrate and commemorate the unique event.

Palio of the Normans

Enna - August 12th/14th, 2009

www.paliodeinormanni.com

Every year Piazza Armerina hosts southern Italy's most ancient medieval show to honor Our Lady Maria Santissima delle Vittorie. This religious celebration draws inspiration from the holy war that the Normans of Count Ruggiero d'Altavilla fought against the Arabs starting in 1061 to free Sicily, under Arab occupation for 150 years. This is a fantastic opportunity to experience and relive the typical ancient memories of the island of Sicily.
