Redentore
Regatta |
|
Venice, July 14th - 15th, 2007
www.comune.venezia.it
The Redentore is one of the most
celebrated festivities in Venice, taking place on the third weekend
in July. The history of the "Redentore" dates back to the late
1500's when Venice was cursed by the plague. As the dise ase
quickly spread through the city, over 40,000 of the city's
inhabitants died. So, in
late 1576, a church was
established in dedication to the Redentore (the Redeemder), in hopes
of an end to the plague. Soon after,
in July of 1577, the plague ended, and
the city of Venice decided that their freedom from the horrible
disease should be celebrated on the third Sunday of every July.
Many masses take place on that Sunday, however the celebrations are
truly begun on Saturday, with a "Holy Mass" in the morning. At
sunset, however, activity erupts with fully illuminated boats
decorated with lights and filled with people around St. Mark's Basin
and the Giudecca canal, celebrating and eating traditional food,
awaiting the fireworks display set to kick off at 11:30pm. The
weekend comes to a close with a traditional gondola regatta.

Landesausstellung 2007 |

Trento,
Through September 25, 2007
www.mart.trento.it
Through
the display of artworks by its main artists, this exhibition
showcases the period known as Symbolism, one of the richest in
history, from an artistic standpoint. The exhibit focuses on the
works by one artist in particular: Maurice Denis. The more than 100
pieces on display take the visitor on a journey through the artist’s
career, from his Nabis period, to the markedly symbolist period, to
his phase of works inspired by neoclassicism. This part of the
event, connected to French symbolism, is held at the Mart in
Rovereto, while the Renaissance-inspired Palazzo delle Albere hosts
the exhibition dedicated to the artworks of artists from the Regions
of Trentino and Sud-Tyrol, inspired by European symbolism. |
