www.polomuseale.firenze.it
The exhibition “The
Medici and the Sciences” addresses the leading role played by physical,
mathematical and natural disciplines in
Tuscany
in the sixteenth-seventeenth centuries. More specifically from Cosimo I
up to Ferdinand II, the Medici were great patrons of both the
constructors of scientific instruments and natural philosophers, since
they were more acutely aware than any other European rulers of the fact
that scientific knowledge and the technological control of nature gave
political power solidity and prestige. This is why, alongside the lavish
collections of paintings, sculpture and jewelery, the Medici also
created a collection of mathematical instruments. The close relationship
between art and science emerges from the precious beauty of many of
these instruments, often one-off pieces and authentic works of art in
themselves.

This exhibition
sets out to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the year in which Messner
achieved his most important goals. In 1978
world famous climber and mountaineer Reinhold Messner took part
in the first Austrian expedition to Mount Everest.
On May 8, he and Peter Habeler proved that Everest could be ascended
without the use of oxygen tanks. Three months later, solo again, Messner
opened a new route to the top of Nanga Parbat.
The Messner Mountain Museum,
by its location alone, presents itself to visitors in a rather
authoritative way: a forced route leads to the Castle. Just like in Tibet, where the
climb around the sacred mount is named “kora”, Messner recreated a path
that would remind visitors of a kora.
