Inaugural Week

Venice, December 14 - 21, 2003

Venice, one of Italy's most popular tourist destinations will be even more in demand with the opening of the fire-damaged and recently-rebuilt  La Fenice Opera House. Once again, Venice and the Opera House will be the scene of many splendid productions as in the past. 

Conductor Riccardo Muti and the orchestra and chorus of the Teatro La Fenice will open the Inaugural Week with a concert on Sunday, December 14th, 2003. Italian President, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and Italian Cultural Minister Giuliano Urbani will attend the opening performance.

During the Inaugural Week (December 14 - 21, 2003) the following important events will take place.   

A concert by the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Christian Thielemann is on December 15th. The prestigious orchestra and chorus of the Accademia Santa Cecilia of Rome and the Aureliano Children's Voices' Chorus will perform a concert conducted by Myung-Whun Chung on December 17th. The orchestra and chorus of the Teatro La Fenice conducted by Marcello Viotti will offer a concert on December 18th. Elton John, one of the most representative and celebrated European pop music songwriters will be seen in concert on December 19th. He has always enjoyed a close link with Venice and spends a good part of the year in his house on the island of Giudecca. For the first time in Venice, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Mariss Jansons will delight the audience on  December 20th. The St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Yuri Temirkanov will close this series of events on December 21st.

The 2004 - 2005 Opera Season will open in November 2004 with a new staging of La Traviata conducted by Lorin Maazel. La Traviata's first performance was at the Teatro La Fenice on March 6th, 1853.
